Pittsburgh Geeks are proud to present:

Geek Education.

Because a well-informed community is a well-paid community.

Reference material from prior seminars:
How Stock Options Work
How To Negotiate a Job Offer

Sure, you can build a successful software project out of bubble gum, duct tape, and a six-year-old version of gcc, but what do you know about negotiating a job offer? How much are your stock options worth? How would you go about starting that company you've always dreamed of running?

This is the sort of practical knowledge that every geek ought to know, but seldom does. Geek Ed is a quarterly seminar series intended to educate the Pittsburgh high-tech community about these issues through knowledgeable speakers instead of painful empirical experience. You don't have to be a genuine geek to attend, but the focus will be on the engineering field.

We plan to hold a Geek Ed seminar roughly every three months, as long as we can come up with interesting topics, qualified panelists, and interested participants. Future topics will include:

  • How To Turn a Brilliant Idea Into a Startup Company
  • Intellectual Propery, Non-Competes, and NDAs
  • Going It Alone: Contracting vs. Permanent Employment
If you'd like to request a topic, recommend a speaker, or just send us general feedback about Geek Ed, please email us.
